After months- nay YEARS- of less than optimal outings, Warner Bros. Pictures has brokered a new deal for their DC Comics-based arm. Previously called DC Films, the branch will now be called DC Studios, and will be run by James Gunn and Peter Safran.
Gunn and Safran will share the titles of co-chairs and co-CEOs of DC Studios. Both had been spotted recently on the WB lot, presumedly meeting for this. They’ve signed a 4 year deal.
“DC has among the most entertaining, powerful, and iconic characters in the world and I am thrilled to have the singular and complementary talents of James and Peter joining our world-class team and overseeing the creative direction of the storied DC Universe,” Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav in a statement. “Their decades of experience in filmmaking, close ties to the creative community, and proven track record thrilling superhero fans around the globe make them uniquely qualified to develop a long-term strategy across film, TV, and animation, and take this iconic franchise to the next level of creative storytelling.”
Just last week, DC Films head Walter Hamada departed the company, amid much turmoil.
Gunn wrote and directed “The Suicide Squad” for Warner Bros. in 2021, bringing both box office and critical success to the much-maligned DCEU. Producer Safran previously worked with Gunn on “The Suicide Squad” and “Peacemaker” as well as other WB projects, such as “Aquaman” and “Shazam!.”
“We’re honored to be the stewards of these DC characters we’ve loved since we were children,” Gunn and Safran said in a statement. “We look forward to collaborating with the most talented writers, directors, and actors in the world to create an integrated, multilayered universe that still allows for the individual expression of the artists involved. Our commitment to Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Harley Quinn, and the rest of the DC stable of characters is only equaled by our commitment to the wonder of human possibility these characters represent. We’re excited to invigorate the theatrical experience around the world as we tell some of the biggest, most beautiful, and grandest stories ever told.”

Mary Anne Butler
Mary Anne Butler (Mab) has been part of the fast-paced world of journalism since she was 15, getting her start in album reviews and live concert coverage for a nationally published (print) music magazine. She eventually transitioned to online media, writing for such sites as UGO/IGN, ComicsOnline, Geek Magazine, Ace of Geeks, Aggressive Comix (where she is still Editor-in-Chief), Bleeding Cool (where she was News Editor), and now Nerdbot as Editor-In-Chief. Over the past 10 years, she’s built a reputation at conventions across the globe as a cosplayer (occasionally), photographer (constantly), panelist and moderator (mostly), and reporter (always). Interviews, reviews, observations, breaking news, and objective reporting are the name of the game for the founder of Harkonnen Knife Fight, a Dune-themed band with an international presence. Though she be but little, she is fierce.
