Primetime Emmy nominee Jenna Fischer (“The Office”) has officially joined the cast of Paramount Pictures’ upcoming“Mean Girls” movie musical. This will be a film adaptation of the 12-time Tony-nominated Broadway musical of the same name, based on the 2004 mega-hit satirical comedy film.

Fischer will play the role of Ms. Heron, Cady Heron’s mom. A role that was originally done by “Saturday Night Live” alumni Ana Gasteyer. She will be working alongside Angourie Rice (“Honor Society”), Reneé Rapp (“Broadway Whodunit: Murder at Montgomery Manor”), Auli’i Cravalho (“Darby and the Dead”), newcomer Jaquel Spivey, Tina Fey (“30 Rock”), Tim Meadows (“Saturday Night Live”), Avantika (“The Sex Lives of College Girls”), Christopher Briney (“Daliland”), and Bebe Wood (“Love, Victor”).

The musical and film both tell the cautionary tale of Cady Heron, the new girl at a Chicago high school. Where she soon befriends outcasts Janis and Damian. But when a popular group of girls known as the plastics set their sight on Cady, Janis convinces her to fake being their friend to spy on them. All with the goal of bringing down the queen bee/biggest mean girl Regina George. The naïve Cady quickly loses herself in her new group of “friends,” costing her real friendships as well as her chance to be with her crush. And that’s just the beginning of the chaos that ensues once Regina finds out about their plan.

The new film is directed by Arturo Perez (“Quarter Life Poetry”) and Samantha Jayne (“Dan Miller”), with Fey penning the script. Composer Jeff Richmond is handling the score, with lyrics by Nell Benjamin. Kyle Hanagami is in charge of the choreography.
As with any “Saturday Night Live” adjacent project, Lorne Michaels will be producing, alongside Fey. Erin David, Caroline Maroney, and Micah Frank are overseeing for Broadway Video, and Eric Gurian and Jeff Richmond are doing the same on behalf of Little Stranger.
We’ll keep you posted on updates on “Mean Girls” as they happen.
