James Gunn Writing New “Superman,” Without Henry Cavill

This entire DC Studios thing just keeps getting weirder and weirder. After already confirming a “Man of Steel 2” was on the way, it would appear that is no longer the case. James Gunn, co-head of DC Studios along with Peter Safran, is apparently penning a brand new “Superman” film, WITHOUT Henry Cavill.

Among those on the slate is Superman. In the initial stages, our story will be focusing on an earlier part of Superman's life, so the character will not be played by Henry Cavill.

Gunn does say he had a meeting with Cavill about working together in the future, but this current script will be about Superman at an earlier stage in life. So, another recasting.

Cavill has since commented on the situation on his Instagram.

Ok we did think of two possible silver linings for this news.

The first is Cavill usually being on a shortlist for the next James Bond actor. At one point, he really REALLY wanted to do it.

The second is Chad Stahelski‘s upcoming reboot of “Highlander.” Back in May, the film was picked up by Lionsgate, with Cavill in the lead. With Cavill recently leaving Netflix’s hit “The Witcher” series, and now no Superman on the horizon, maybe this means production on “Highlander” can kick off.

We’ll keep you updated on this and other news.

Mary Anne Butler (Mab) has been part of the fast-paced world of journalism since she was 15, getting her start in album reviews and live concert coverage for a nationally published (print) music magazine. She eventually transitioned to online media, writing for such sites as UGO/IGN, ComicsOnline, Geek Magazine, Ace of Geeks, Aggressive Comix (where she is still Editor-in-Chief), Bleeding Cool (where she was News Editor), and now Nerdbot as Editor-In-Chief. Over the past 10 years, she’s built a reputation at conventions across the globe as a cosplayer (occasionally), photographer (constantly), panelist and moderator (mostly), and reporter (always). Interviews, reviews, observations, breaking news, and objective reporting are the name of the game for the founder of Harkonnen Knife Fight, a Dune-themed band with an international presence. Though she be but little, she is fierce.
