James Gunn Teases Fans with Possible Lobo Project

James Gunn and Peter Safran have become the co-heads of DC Studios, a Warner Bros. Pictures film division. Gunn is teasing fans with the possibility to bring Lobo to the silver screen. Amongst the falderal surrounding Twitter, Gunn has moved to social media platform Mastodon. He christened his account with his first post, a picture of the grungy alien bounty hunter. Fans are anxious to know more, given the popularity of the DC anti-hero.

You can see the post here.

DC Comics fans have long wanted to see the cigar-toting Czarnian crash his way into film properties. With a heavy metal flair that would surely turn any film into a fantastically fun mix of action and violence. A Lobo film, much like “Deadpool,” would NEED an R rating. Anything less would be severely disappointing.

Created by Roger Slifer and Keith Giffen, Lobo has had a fascinating climb to popularity. Initially a villain, Lobo was shelved after comic writers couldn’t find much use for him. Revived in the 1990s as a parody of all the gritty Marvel icons of the time — Cable, Wolverine, etc. — fans accepted him with wholeheartedly. He seemed to check all the boxes fans enjoyed rather than be a pointed finger at the ridiculousness of craggy anti-heroes.

His look is reminiscent of Gene Simmons, adorned with a spiked leather vest, and built like a tank. His powers are up to interpretation, though at this point, he’s technically immortal. Rapid regeneration (even when reduced to mush), superhuman strength, and resistance to age and disease makes him a catch-all for whoever he’s up against. He’s gone toe-to-toe with greats like Superman and Etrigan the Demon. He’s a certified badass with few weaknesses.

Jeffrey Dean Morgan as The Comedian, “Watchmen” Warner Bros. Pictures

Casting for Lobo will be paramount, but Jeffrey Dean Morgan is champing at the bit to play this DC Comics icon. “The only one I want to play is DC and Lobo,” Morgan told CinePOP. “He’s badass…I don’t think that I’m as big as Lobo is, but if you could transplant Mickey Rourke’s body on my head, that would be just great.” Morgan might certainly have the chops for delivering the attitude. Though an actor like Jason Momoa has the proportions. We’ll just have to wait and see.

We’ll certainly keep an eye out for further announcements. But fans are excited to think that Gunn is teasing at a new project in the works.
