Live-Action “Hercules” Takes Inspiration from TikTok Apparently

Every so often, you read an interview with the creatives behind a favorite thing that leaves you scratching your head. This is kind of how we feel after the recent delve into The Russo Brothers‘ (Joe and Anthony) upcoming live-action “Hercules” for Disney. The pair have brought Marvel Studios some it the biggest box office hits in history, and are in the process of adapting a modern animated classic.

On paper, this is an…interesting notion. Considering how many episodes of “Community” the Russos helmed and their proven track record with humor, and Guy Ritchie directing, this could be a pretty solid outing. It’s not that we don’t have FAITH in Joe, Anthony, and Guy. Our concerns mostly come in with their supposed inspiration choices.

During a recent chat with Variety, Joe Russo shed a little light on the upcoming film. “I think they’re excited to see what we can all bring to it in a way that isn’t just a reinterpretation of the animated film,” he said. “[Its] a little bit more experimental in tone, a little bit more experimental in execution.”

Okay, yes, that sounds fine, we guess. [Although I myself absolutely HATED Ritchie’s “Aladdin” for various reasons, I’ve enjoyed far more of his films than not.] But how the heck does TikTok figure in to “Hercules?”

“There are questions about how you translate it as a musical,” Russo said. “Audiences today have been trained by TikTok, right? What is their expectation of what that musical looks like and feels like? That can be a lot of fun and help us push the boundaries a little bit on how you execute a modern musical.”

    …oh…

At present, there are no confirmed casting announcements. Although Bruce Campbell is pretty chuffed about the idea of playing Hades. And, Danny DeVito wants to come back as Phil! We’ll let you know what we hear about this and other news.

Mary Anne Butler (Mab) has been part of the fast-paced world of journalism since she was 15, getting her start in album reviews and live concert coverage for a nationally published (print) music magazine. She eventually transitioned to online media, writing for such sites as UGO/IGN, ComicsOnline, Geek Magazine, Ace of Geeks, Aggressive Comix (where she is still Editor-in-Chief), Bleeding Cool (where she was News Editor), and now Nerdbot as Editor-In-Chief. Over the past 10 years, she’s built a reputation at conventions across the globe as a cosplayer (occasionally), photographer (constantly), panelist and moderator (mostly), and reporter (always). Interviews, reviews, observations, breaking news, and objective reporting are the name of the game for the founder of Harkonnen Knife Fight, a Dune-themed band with an international presence. Though she be but little, she is fierce.
