Imagine living in a Rapunzel tower located in the woods in a remote part of Scotland. This unique bit of real estate is on the market for £80,000 (or around $91,000 USD). The structure is called the Binn Hill Tower, and it’s located in Kinfauns, a village in Perthshire. This 4-story stone tower dates back to 1813, and features Gothic-style architecture. Its top floor boasts a panoramic view of Perthshire, a county known for its breathtaking scenery.

Current owner Vicki Galligan purchased the property 7 years ago when her son was born. She intended to renovate the unliveable building into a getaway for her family. When Galligan purchased it Binn Hill had no electricity or water, and the stairs at the top of the tower were degraded. Unfortunately, these renovations were never completed due to personal circumstances. Galligan says the ideal buyer should have “vision and imagination,” and someone who can “overlook obstacles that come with the tower and location.” She hopes another buyer with the right vision and skill set could transform it into a unique off-the-grid home.
Considering one of the biggest obstacles will be the lack of water and electricity. Due to its isolated location installing electricity may turn out to be “quite an effort and expensive,” since it would have to be routed through a forest. The owner’s original plan was to install eco-toilets as well as a solar and backup generator to cut down on some of these expenses. There are also fireplaces on each floor of the tower, so she planned to install wood-burning stoves for heat.

If anything Galligan is framing the lack of electricity as a selling point. “If you wanted to live off-grid, this is an ideal time the way the energy prices are going,” she said. “Things are developing dramatically, so this would be an amazing project for eco-living.”

She also hyped up its remote location as another feature for the right buyer. “People are put off by the lack of vehicle access, but that’s what I love about it,” she added that it’s always an “eventful five minutes” when she walks from where her car is parked at the bottom of the hill to the tower.
