New Selena Music Getting Released 27 Years After Her Death

Almost 3 decades after Latin-American pop sensation Selena Quintanilla-Perez was tragically murdered, her family is releasing a new album of her music.

Selena’s father Abraham Quintanilla spoke to Jose Rosario, revealing that his family is collaborating with Warner Music to put out a posthumous record. “The public still remembers Selena, you know. They haven’t let go of her,” Quintanilla said. “And so they are waiting for a project like this to come out.”

The new album will be titled “Moonchild Mixes,” and will feature remixed versions of some of Selena’s hit songs, as well as some previously unreleased material that she recorded as a young teenager.

Just like the rest of Selena’s musical career “Moonchild Mixes” is very much a family project. Her brother A.B. Quintanilla is a producer on it and her sister Suzette Quintanilla helped to design the album art for the 13-song collection. “I remixed all her vinyls,” her brother said in an interview with Tino Cochino Radio. “With this album, with an EDM (electronic dance music) world, with arpeggiators and with keyboards, I made her flow to cumbia.” In late July the team released a remixed version of Selena’s hit song “Como Te Quiero Yo A Ti.”

Selena was born on April 16, 1971, in Lake Jackson, Texas. She began her singing career when she was just 9 years old, singing with the Quintanilla family’s band, Los Dinos. As she grew older she became known for her revealing stage costumes which often included high boots and bustiers. Her style and undeniable talent immediately drew comparisons to other pop legends like Madonna and Elvis Presley. But the singer always emphasized family values over everything else. She was even married to one of her band members, Chris Perez.

Unfortunately, the 23-year-old singer was murdered in 1995 by the president of her fan club. Despite her tragic and sudden passing, Selena’s influence is still felt to this day.  In 1994 she won a Grammy Award for Best Mexican-American Album for “Live” making her the first female Tejano artist to win in that category. Her albums went platinum several times over and Selena still holds the Guinness World Record for the biggest-selling Latin album in the U.S. She has also been the subject of a movie, a Netflix series, as well as having a museum with her merchandise.

“Moonchild Mixes” will be released on August 26th, 2022.
