Next James Bond May Be “Younger,” Ruling Out Fan Favorites

The newest rumors about Bond, James Bond indicate the powers that be are looking for a younger actor to play the iconic character. Producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson reportedly passed on “Outlander” star Sam Heughan (who is 42), who has been a leading contender for sometime.

According to Ross King, an entertainment correspondent on the British morning TV show “Lorraine,” the actor did not fit the strict requirements set by directing studio Eon. Speaking on air, King said: “The latest rumor – and in some ways part of this is very much true – which is, basically, the Bond producers are looking for a younger Bond.” He then said the studio is likely seeking “someone probably in their 30s.”

This rumor potentially rules out the numerous names previously floated who are in their 40s, such as other fan-favorite Brits Idris Elba and Tom Hardy. Other actors who have been mentioned for the role, such as 39-year-old Henry Cavill, may also be too old to suit the producers’ requirements.

“At the end of the day they want someone who will be Bond for the next three movies,” explained Ross. “For the franchise, they want someone who will carry it through the same way Daniel Craig did it.”

For what it’s worth, the reasoning makes sense. Craig was 38 when he was first cast as the super spy in “Casino Royale” in 2006. The now 54-year-old actor famously told The Guardian he would “rather slash my wrists” than reprise the role past 2021’s “No Time To Die.” And if he did, it would only be for the money.

These are, of course, only rumors, and it’s impossible to say how the producers will move forward. There’s always the hope the studio might continue with a female 007/James Bond as Lashana Lynch played in the most recent Bond film. We’ll keep you updated with more information as it comes in.
