Denji is a teenage boy living with a Chainsaw Devil named Pochita. Due to the debt his father left behind, he has been living a rock-bottom life while repaying his debt by harvesting devil corpses with Pochita. One day, Denji is betrayed and killed. As his consciousness fades, he makes a contract with Pochita and gets revived as “Chainsaw Man”–a man with a devil’s heart.
“Chainsaw Man” takes place in 1997 in an alternate timeline where the Soviet Union still exists. Some major historical events have not happened, such as the Holocaust. There are two types of people on Earth; humans and the devils born from their fears. Devils are dangerous and malevolent with powers proportional to the amount of fear they incite.

Humans are able to make contracts with them so that they can use their powers. These humans are called Devil Hunters. Devils originated from hell and the story is about the cycle of birth and death between Earth and Hell. The biggest Devils in Hell are the Primal Fears which have never been killed.
