This Pizza Topping Survey Will Make You Question Statistics

If there’s one thing you should know about surveys, it’s that numbers don’t mean a hell of a lot if you don’t know how those numbers came about. Whenever any kind of dental commercial comes on talking about how ‘nine out of ten dentists approve’ something, who are these dentists? And why is that tenth dentist always so disagreeable? Do they know something I don’t? Based on that, let’s take a look at some “numbers” that came up thanks to Barstool Sports trying to celebrate National Pizza Day.

National Pizza Day was February 9th. Depending on the household you live in, every day could be National Pizza Day but officially, it’s the 9th of February. In the hullabaloo of promotions and advertisements, one of them made us do a collective double-take here at Nerdbot.

    Barstool Sports tweeted the following:

In honor of #NationalPizzaDay, what is your state’s favorite Pizza topping? @onebite

Get @onebite now, available at Walmart pic.twitter.com/7u7Z8W8LRb

Let’s get something out of the way for starters, Barstool Sports is invested in this topic because of the One Bite frozen pizza brand, available at Walmart, which is indicated at the very bottom of the image. That’s not the part that’s a mind better of pizzaf**kery here though. Let’s take a quick look at some of those favorite toppings by state.

Is that uh, corn I see as the favorite topping in Pennsylvania and West Virginia? That tuna up there in Minnesota? Did they interview Rose Nylund in St. Olaf for that statistic? I decided to check some other sources online about those ones, and want to take a guess at what I found to correlate it? Nothing. Delish did a study with Slice, and you know what they say the favorite topping in Pennsylvania is? Pepperoni and mushrooms. Which one is more popular than the other, who knows? But you know what NEITHER OF THEM IS CORN!

Just to be on the safe side, I decided to check out some other websites. And to focus on Minnesota, where the allegedly favorite topping is Tuna?! Not according to HowtoCook.Recipes. They apparently used Google search data to determine the favorite topping is olives. Here’s Minnesota radio station 98.1 stating that the number one topping is BBQ Chicken. I even checked some restaurant websites like Pizza Luce, and they don’t even offer tuna as a menu option!

I am freely willing to admit from this research that there is no such thing as consistency when it comes to what pizza topping is the most favored. However, one thing that can be said is what is consistently not listed as a favored or even an offered topping, and that’s corn and tuna. I would love to know where Barstool Sports, One Bite, and Walmart gathered the statistics from to form this map.

Maybe they should spend less time on ridiculous maps and more time making a better pizza. Since, according to Walmart, the One Bite Frozen Pizza currently sits with a review score of 2.1 out of 5.0. My personal favorite and totally foreseeable review? This one from “Kurt.”

One Bite is all I had to take of this pizza to know it was meh.

    – Kurt, Walmart.com review

Though maybe Kurt was from Pennsylvania and his pizza DIDN’T HAVE ENOUGH CORN ON IT!
