Lucy Liu Joins “Shazam!” Sequel as Kalypso, Daughter of Atlas

We are pretty darn excited to share the news that Lucy Liu has joined the upcoming “Shazam!” sequel, “Fury of the Gods.” Liu will apparently be tackling a villainous role.

According to the usual suspects, Liu will be playing Kalypso, second Daughter of Atlas, and sister to Hesperia. Hesperia will be played by Oscar winning actress Dame Helen Mirren, as we previously reported. Neither baddie has a true counter part in the original comics.

Zachary Levi will return as Shazam!, with Asher Angel also returning as Billy Batson, the teenage alter ego of the hero. Mark Strong, Jack Dylan Grazer, Grace Fulton, Faithe Herman, Ian Chen, Jovan Armand, Cooper Andrews, Marta Milans, Mirren, and Djimon Hounsou also star.We also know that “West Side Story” star Rachel Zegler is also joining the cast of “Shazam! Fury of the Gods.”

The original synopsis for the first “Shazam!” film reads:

We all have a superhero inside us, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out. In Billy Batson’s (Angel) case, by shouting out one word—SHAZAM!—this streetwise 14-year-old foster kid can turn into the adult Super Hero Shazam (Levi), courtesy of an ancient wizard. Still a kid at heart—inside a ripped, godlike body—Shazam revels in this adult version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with them! Can he fly? Does he have X-ray vision? Can he shoot lightning out of his hands? Can he skip his social studies test? Shazam sets out to test the limits of his abilities with the joyful recklessness of a child. But he’ll need to master these powers quick.

David F. Sandberg, who directed “Shazam!,” will helm “Shazam! Fury of the Gods” from a screenplay by Henry Gayden.

“Shazam! Fury of the God” currently has a release date of June 2nd, 2023.

She eventually transitioned to online media, writing for such sites as UGO/IGN, ComicsOnline, Geek Magazine, Ace of Geeks, Aggressive Comix (where she is still Editor-in-Chief), Bleeding Cool (where she was News Editor), and now Nerdbot as Editor-In-Chief. Over the past 10 years, she’s built a reputation at conventions across the globe as a cosplayer (occasionally), photographer (constantly), panelist and moderator (mostly), and reporter (always). Interviews, reviews, observations, breaking news, and objective reporting are the name of the game for the founder of Harkonnen Knife Fight, a Dune-themed band with an international presence. Though she be but little, she is fierce.
