10 Songs to Drunkenly Karaoke on New Year’s Eve

Maybe you will ring in 2020 with a quiet evening at home. Perhaps I will see you at Nerdbot’s Nerd Knights party. You could be going to some crazy event, staying at home, spending time with family, or traveling to another planet (somehow? Hey. It’s your idea!). I can guarantee one thing, though. Lots of you will be drinking – hopefully safely – and a lot of you will be doing some drunk karaoke.

    Here are my bold suggestions.

In the Year 2525 – Zager and Evans

Hey, it’s the new year you are celebrating, so why not go way into the future and have some fun. This is a bittersweet song and a deep cut. For bonus points, sing the Futurama parody lyrics.

Reeling in the Years – Steely Dan

Well, this one is obvious. And any band named after a sex toy has to be cool, right? Grab a martini and get everyone to sing along. Even that jerk. You know the one.

Real American – Hulk Hogan’s Entrance Theme

Do you live in the US of A? I know there are some major crazy bad things happening here, but for one night, why not celebrate? America has done some cool stuff… the Internet, landing on the moon, Rocky movies… So why not grab a Pabst Blue Ribbon and sing your heart out!

Older – They Might Be Giants

You know what else happens every year? We get older. Plus, if you are a nerd in your 30’s or 40’s, They Might Be Giants was probably part of your childhood. So, hey, why not get a little older. And then older. And then older.

The Saga Begins – Weird Al

The Skywalker saga ended in 2019. I hated the last movies. Lots of people loved the movie. But, as nerds, we are probably all still into Star Wars at some level. Celebrate the Vader/Luke/Palpatine/Rey story with a little Weird Al.

    Friday – Rebecca Black

Do you hate your friends and love memes? Get up there and belt out Rebecca Black’s Friday. Take it back from the jokes and bring it to the people! But only do it with a nice non-alcoholic drink, like a Shirley Temple.

S.O.B. – Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats

I’m an old dude. I’ve got gray hair. Life has beaten my down a few times. So what will I be doing? Drinking a lot of cheap whiskey and singing about how I probably shouldn’t be drinking so much cheap whiskey. Give me a drink!

Brandy (You’re a Fine Girl) – Looking Glass

If you are a Marvel fan and have some broken heart in your past, why not sing Brandy? Oh. I know. Everyone karaokes this, you say. This is true. But do it dressed as Star Lord and drinking a period appropriate drink, like a tequila sunrise or white Russian.

    MakeDamnSure – Taking Back Sunday

Did you have a bad breakup in 2019? Maybe the person you loved just didn’t love you back? Or maybe you just like to annoy people by screaming emo songs all the time. All are great reasons to push your hair in your face, shove your thumbs through holes in your long sleeved shirt, and be sad. Be sad for 2019.

    All Star – Smash Mouth

What great, catchy song was in both Shrek AND Mystery Men? All Star! Plus the years start coming and they don’t stop coming, so there’s truth here. Everyone will sing alone. You will be the hero of the night of 2019. And… Shrek!

What song will you be singing on New Year’s Eve? Let Nerdbot know in the comments!
