It’s finally the season for Halloween!  This time of year, people get their adrenaline going and experience the thrill of life by watching scary movies.

Unsure of which one to watch?  Don’t worry; this list is here to help you decide which one to brave next.  Netflix features a variety of movies with suspenseful, nerve racking, and even gory plots for you to enjoy this season.

Whether you’re hiding under your blankets or squeezing the life out of someone’s hand, these movies are bound to keep you on your toes.

    The Ritual (2017)

Being in the woods alone may be a peaceful scene, however, the thought that there’s something out there that can turn it into the complete opposite feeling.  From director David Bruckner, is a suspenseful story of four college friends who decide to hike through the Scandinavian wilderness. They begin their adventure as a tribute to their fifth friend who was murdered in a convenience store.  Inevitably, night falls and the friends become haunted by more than just the memories of their friend’s murder. Soon, it becomes more than a simple hike through the woods…

    The Conjuring (2013)

Since its release back in 2013, The Conjuring has remained a popular movie for enticing frights.  The movie follows paranormal investigators and demonologists Lorraine and Ed Warren as they investigate the house of the Perrons.  At this house, a paranormal presence is lurking and begins to make its appearance. Things escalate quickly and soon, the Warrens discover the house’s macabre history.

    Before I Wake (2016)

From Director Mike Flanagan comes a new perspective on the term psychic.  After the death of their son, Mark and Jessie adopt 8-year-old Cody and welcome him into their home.  He reveals that he is terrified to fall asleep, but Jessie dismisses it as a normal child’s reaction. Soon after, however, Mark and Jessie’s dead son unexpectedly appears in their living room.  They quickly figure out why Cody is afraid to fall asleep. Whatever he dreams becomes true. Unfortunately, this applies to his nightmares, too. The family must now uncover the truth behind these supernatural events before it’s too late.

    Hush (2016)

This thriller has less to do with graphic, gory content, and more with suspenseful and nerve racking situations.  A deaf writer leads a peaceful life out in the forest. This gets turned upside down when a masked killer suddenly appears outside her window.  Now, she must work through the silence and fight for her life.

    Death Note (2017)

An adaptation of the popular manga with the same name, Death Note revolves around a high school student who discovers a book with supernatural powers.  The book allows him to kill anybody he desires simply by writing their names in it while picturing their face.  He takes advantage of this new power and kills anybody he decides is unworthy of life.

    Bird Box (2018)

Last year’s Bird Box was such a big hit that it sparked new trends and memes all over the internet.  The people in this thriller live in a world where a mysterious force is at play.  One thing is for sure: keep your eyes closed because if you see it, you’ll die. Sandra Bullock’s character does everything to protect her children and get them to safety.  Her maternal instincts remain strong as her family embarks on the journey, deprived of their sight.

    Gehenna: Where Death Lives (2016)

In order to build a new resort, a company’s representatives visit the site of Saipan as a possible location.  They believe they have found the perfect spot. However, looks can be deceiving, and they soon find out the meaning behind the expression, “curiosity killed the cat.”

I’ll admit, it was difficult to keep my eyes peeled on the screen while writing this, but I hope that this list helps for those searching for the right late night fright.
