Many restaurants have promotional items during the summer and the Australian-themed steakhouse is among them. Outback has taken its Bloomin’ Onion, an onion deep-fried in a batter loaded in spices, and created an entire menu inspired by the it. Many of the items are simply topped with Bloomin’ Onion petals or has extra seasoning, but one item stood out as truly embracing the Bloomin’ theme, and this journalist had it try it.
Bloomin’ Fried Chicken jumped out to me because I enjoy many chicken-fried chicken dishes, and this one was fried in the same batter as the Bloomin’ Onion. The chicken breast used was of good quality, though a little thinner then the breading would have you believe. The flavor reminded me of Popeye’s mild chicken strips that have been dipped in blackened ranch, very tasty. The only drawback I found when eating this is the spices are a bit overpowering, so be prepared to cut it with some of the free bread or get a bland side, like a baked potato.
If you like Bloomin’ Onions, then I recommend going out and giving the Bloomin’ Fried Chicken a try. However, much like a Bloomin’ Onion is a little much to eat solo, the Bloomin’ Fried Chicken wouldn’t be something I’d order on the regular.
