There’s a petition going around asking for Brie Larson to step down from her role as Captain Marvel. In the petition, it states, “We need Brie Larson to step down from her role to prove she is an ally of social justice and ensure a gay woman of color plays the role.” The full petition can be found in the link below.
Although Captain Marvel made over a billion dollars worldwide, there are those who dislike Brie Larson in the role. Some of this stems from Brie stating she wanted more women and people of color both in film and covering entertainment, which some have interpreted as anti-white-male sentiment. Another camp doesn’t find Brie’s Captain Marvel all that compelling, and see the film’s numbers being inflated by the strength of the Avengers Franchise.
The petition is an interesting tactic from those who dislike Brie Larson. It paints Brie as being “all-talk” because she doesn’t donate to inclusive charities. Since actors get paid big bucks for being in Marvel films, if she can’t donate or let a more diverse person take the role, then her critics can call her a hypocrite. It is doubtful anything will happen because Marvel contracts are rather tough, but if the petition gets enough support, Disney then has an out. Again doubtful.
