Godzilla: King of the Monsters director Michael Dougherty would like to see a crossover pitting Godzilla vs The Avengers (and frankly, wouldn’t we all?).
He teased the idea in a tweet showcasing a comic cover from the time when Marvel had the rights to make a Godzilla comic series back in the 70s. In Godzilla #23 the King of the Monsters takes on the Avengers. Underneath the cover pic the director writes “This movie would make the world a better place.”
Yes it would.
Sadly, the only place we are likely to see a showdown between the two at the cinemas will be at the box office. But the two franchises won’t be duking it out at the box office directly, with Endgame coming out April 26 and King of the Monsters not coming out until May.
The recent Captain Marvel movie pushed the MCU total box office to over $18 billion. Of course, Marvel has had over a decade and 20+ movies to reach that total. Warner Bros. and Legendary Picture’s shared MonsterVerse is still in its infancy but still has almost $1.095 billion from its first two entries, Godzilla (2014) and Kong: Skull Island (2017). King of the Monsters should be a big moneymaker since it has not only Godzilla but also Mothra, Rodan, and King Ghidorah. Coming in 2020 will be the MonsterVerse’s version of Civil War with Godzilla vs Kong.
There was a time we never thought we would see Spider-Man or the X-Men in the MCU, so maybe someday? Until then, all we can do is dream.
