Why Video Game Design Makes for a Great Career

If you are wondering whether or not you are wasting time playing video games all of the time, the answer is a resounding no. That is if you plan on making a career out of video games. If you play enough that you have developed an interest in designing them for a living, then you have a bright future in front of you. Here are some of the reasons video game design makes for a stellar career.

    Job Security

There is a huge and almost unquenchable thirst for video games from all demographics of society. When it comes to employment that seems like it isn’t going anywhere anytime soon, video game design would be at or near the top of the list. In fact, even better than not going anywhere, it is actually constantly evolving into ever more realistic graphics and gameplay.

    Very Artistic

Video games have evolved far beyond the days of Pong and Pac-Man. These days, there are entire teams of artists who work on designing the various aspects that make up complete video game projects. Whether it be coming with characters and the dialogue between them, the world in which they exist, or the graphic that capture the imagination of players around the world, video game developers are bona fide artists who can use their imagination and creative talents to bring joy and happiness to game lovers everywhere.

    Easy to Pay for

If you’re going to college to get a degree in video game design, rejoice in the fact that it is actually pretty easy to pay for. As with most other college degrees, you can qualify for various grants and scholarships that offer free money that you should definitely take advantage of. After that, try applying for private student loans. While most financial aid offices push government-backed loans, Earnest private student loans are actually more flexible and may have lower interest rates than their government counterparts.

    Casual Workspace

While a game design career can certainly be stressful due to things like deadlines and programming code, it is still a very casual work environment of which to be a part. There is no dress code and no set hours. As long as the work is getting done, you can come and go as you please and that’s if you even have to show up to an office at all. Many game companies allow you to work completely from home, as long as you have the equipment available to do so. As far as jobs with upwardly mobile income potential, game design is one of the most laidback options out there.

    Specialization

There is no one set job in regards to game design. Modern games are so complex that there is much room for highly specialized jobs within the design environment. Whether it is writing the story, coding the actual game, graphic design, or even creating the sound effects, there is plenty of opportunity for people of all skill sets to get in on the video game design career path.
