What Is VPS? A Beginner’s Guide to Virtual Private Servers

Are you ready to get your website online? If so, you have likely looked into WordPress hosting and other hosting options such as cloud hosting. Unfortunately, for those new to this complex online realm, things may get confusing quickly. After all, there are a lot of terms and jargon related to your website and hosting. One term that you will hear often is VPS hosting or Virtual Private Server hosting. Keep reading to learn more about VPS hosting and if it is right for your business.

    What Are Virtual Private Servers?

A VPS or Virtual Private Server is not as complicated as it may seem. Put simply, a server is a powerful computer used to store all the data and files that make your website what it is. If someone types your site’s domain name into the web browser, the powerful computer will “serve up” the website on their screen.

The virtual part of the VPS means that virtualization technology to split the one powerful server into several virtual serves. You can think of it like this – it is a single piece of hardware that works like multiple individual servers.

The private is just as it is stated – your virtual server is only years. You don’t have to share data, CPU, or RAM with anyone else.

    How Does a VPS Work?

With VPS hosting, you have the simulated experience of a dedicated server. This is true even though you will be sharing the physical server with other people.

The web hosting provider you choose will install a virtual layer over your server’s OS (operating system) with virtualization technology. This separates the server into individual compartments featuring virtual walls. With this layer, it lets every user install their own software and OS.

Since the VPS is separating your files and data from the other users on the operating system level, it means you really have a private server. This means that your website will stay in a secure container and have guaranteed server resources like CPU cores, disk space, memory, and more. You do not have to share this with anyone else.

Should You Switch to VPS Hosting?

One of the best ways to determine if you should upgrade to VPS is by taking stock of your existing website. Some of the top signs that you should go virtual can be found below.

    Security Concerns

If you are looking for enhanced security features, more backup space, want to take online payments, need improved website reliability, or advanced monitoring capabilities, then VPS is a smart choice. When you choose VPS, it means you have reliable resources and superior security features.

    Higher Traffic Volumes

When you first create a website, you won’t be receiving much traffic. At this point, using shared hosting is a perfect solution. However, if your audience and traffic are continuing to grow, it is a good idea to think about an upgrade. You don’t want to have your website running too slowly or have your server crash because it cannot handle all the incoming traffic. If you believe you will have more visitors coming to your site, go ahead and switch to a VPS, it will pay off.

    Making a Change to VPS

As you can see, there are several benefits offered by VPS. If you have been thinking about making a change, now may be a good time to do this. Be sure to take time to consider the information here and decide based on what is best for your needs and your business. In the long run, this is going to pay off and help ensure ongoing business success.
