Punisher Co-Creator Gerry Conway Clarifies Logo Inspiration (Again)

We’ll admit it, there is a certain joy in watching someone on the internet getting corrected about a “fact” by a person directly involved in the creation of said fact. Things like the daily mansplainers who show up on Gail Simone‘s Twitter account explaining who the Birds of Prey are, or that time a guy tried to correct Deborah Nadoolman Landis on the inspiration behind “Indiana Jones” signature hat.

Today’s entry is one that seems to pop up every so often because ‘experts’ know more than the creators, right? Yeah not so much.

Gerry Conway, who co-created the Marvel Comics character The Punisher along with artists John Romita Sr. and Ross Andru, and happens to know a thing or two about Frank Castle.

LADBible ran an article claiming the iconic Punisher skull logo took it’s inspiration from Nazis during World War II. Conway corrected them.

“It was partially inspired by the 'totenkopf' skill-and-bones logo worn by the Nazi SS during World War II, Gizmodo reports.”
No. It wasn’t. It was inspired by pirates. *And* Lee Falk’s The Phantom. Ask someone who knows. https://t.co/hfQWXVLVkz

This isn’t the first time Conway and the logo have been in the news in recent years. During the Black Lives Matter protests in 2020, Conway started a campaign via Custom Ink using new Punisher logo designs to raise money for the BLM movement. This was in response to the amount of police officers and their supporters who had appropriated the skull design. Also, the whole blue lives matter people not really understanding the point of Frank Castle?

Castle is a character that is based on vigilante justice for when the system fails its people. Conway has been very vocal about police’s use of the symbol.

Mary Anne Butler (Mab) has been part of the fast-paced world of journalism since she was 15, getting her start in album reviews and live concert coverage for a nationally published (print) music magazine. She eventually transitioned to online media, writing for such sites as UGO/IGN, ComicsOnline, Geek Magazine, Ace of Geeks, Aggressive Comix (where she is still Editor-in-Chief), Bleeding Cool (where she was News Editor), and now Nerdbot as Editor-In-Chief. Over the past 10 years, she’s built a reputation at conventions across the globe as a cosplayer (occasionally), photographer (constantly), panelist and moderator (mostly), and reporter (always). Interviews, reviews, observations, breaking news, and objective reporting are the name of the game for the founder of Harkonnen Knife Fight, a Dune-themed band with an international presence. Though she be but little, she is fierce.
