3 Ways to Preserve Your Old Home Movies

Back from the 1970s-90s, many families captured their biggest moments with video cameras. Whether it was a birthday, a family event or even a camping trip, it was common for parents to break out the camcorder.

These old home movies are full of cherished memories that are important to millions of families. Unfortunately, over time, these tapes will begin to deteriorate. Eventually, they will be completely unwatchable and their contents will be lost forever. As you can imagine, this can be very difficult for some families.

Instead of just waiting for the clock to run out on these tapes, you need to be proactive. With that in mind, let’s look at a couple of ways to preserve your old home movies and keep them in good shape.

    Digitize Them

Far and away the best choice when it comes to preserving your old home movies is to digitize them.If you convert them to a digital version, you can ensure they will last forever (as long as you don’t accidentally delete them). Not only that, but it will prevent them from deteriorating over time and you will always be able to watch them, whenever you want, without the need for a VCR.

While there is a way for you to digitize your movies yourself, it can often involve a lot of equipment and having to spend a good amount of time on the process. Instead, consider working with professionals. If you visit Just8mm, you will see that they can help you quickly and easily digitize your old home movies, and ensure they turn out incredible.

In addition to preserving them, digitizing your old home movies makes them very easy to share and send to family members. This method can also free up a lot of space in your home, which is a very good thing as many Americans have a major clutter problem.

    Store Them Well

If you still want to keep your home movies in their original format, it is crucial that you store them correctly. You should store them safely and securely in either boxes or bags to protect them from dust and other debris. They should be kept in a room with a steady temperature, and without high humidity. Also, it is good to keep them away from direct light as much as possible, too.

If these old home movies are stored incorrectly or without care, it can hurt their longevity. They can get dusty or dirty, bright lights can ruin them and too much moisture can lead to them deteriorating much more quickly.

    Be Careful During Transport

There will likely come a time in your life when you will need to move to a new home or transport the movies somewhere else. It is crucial that you do this carefully and safely. They should be safely transported in their boxes, and potentially protected by some type of cushioning or padding. Also, consider putting their box on top of larger and heavier boxes, to ensure the tapes remain in good shape.

If they get knocked around in a bag, crushed, scratched or dropped, it could destroy them or hurt their quality. In addition to damage, there is always the chance of these home movies getting lost. Always know where you put them during a move, and where you keep them in your home.

Preserving your old home movies is important to keep the memories alive and ensure they can be passed down for generations. These three methods will ensure your movies stand the test of time and don’t become lost or damaged.
