The Saw franchise is about to get a brand new entry. Mike P. Nelson (Beware Boiúna) will direct the currently untitled film. The script is written by Gregory Weidman and Geoff Tock, the same team behind the upcoming film Below.
Rights for the Saw franchise were recently acquired by Blumhouse Atomic Monster from Twisted Pictures. Thankfully, franchise creator James Wan partially owns the recently merged studio. Wan and co-creator Leigh Whannell will be producing and helping “guide the future of the franchise,” creating a full-circle moment. Blumhouse and Lionsgate will also be backing the film.
Jason Blum of Blumhouse will also produce. Mark Burg, Oren Koules, Stacey Testro, Michael Clear, and Judson Scott executive produce. Alayna Glasthal and Sarah Paek will oversee the project for Atomic Monster.
“Making the original Saw was a defining experience for me, so it was essential to find a director who would honor that world,” Wan said in a statement. “Mike has a raw, distinctive filmmaking voice with an inventive approach to the genre, and I believe he’ll bring something truly unique and special to the franchise.”
“Being asked to play in this twisted sandbox with James is nothing short of a dream come true,” adds Nelson. “Greg and Geoff and James have crafted such a wild script that brings the mystery of the original while exploring new insane bloody ideas that meld so well with the brutal moral compass of the franchise. Let the games begin!”
