After tearing his bicep in a stunt gone wrong, Ryan Hurst‘s journey as Kratos in Amazon’s God of War is at an end. Without their lead star, production in Vancouver halted in June. Showrunner Ronald D. Moore (Battlestar Galactica) not only has to re-shoot four completed episodes but must square away production by early fall to meet a strict back-to-back season deadline. Amazon Studios is currently in talks with Hollywood heavyweight Dave Bautista, and looks to leverage an existing relationship to fill a god-sized hole.
Work Buddies
Dave Bautista is a very busy man. Since 2020, he’s starred in more than 12 feature films. Three of those with Amazon Studios. His latest was a team-up with Jason Momoa in 2026’s The Wrecking Crew. Bautista is slated for an additional role as the villain in the company’s Henry Cavill-led Highlander remake. Along with a spot in 2024’s Roadhouse sequel. Outside of Amazon, Bautista capped off his run as Drax the Destroyer in Disney’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3 and even starred in both Denis Villeneuve‘s Dune reboots.
Looking the part
For years, fans have been clamoring for Dave Bautista to play a live-action Kratos. Heavyweight training and a career in professional Wrestling have prepared him for a role many people still believe he could easily walk into today. At his peak, Bautista was nearly 300 lbs. of solid muscle, with facial features that resembled a younger PS2/PS3 generation Kratos. The Amazon series adapts the latest two games in the legendary God of War franchise. Centuries have worn Kratos into a much older, grizzled, notably bearded, version of his early 2000s self. Slimmed down at 57 years old, Bautista has seemingly aged with the role. Carrying a significant amount of “old man” muscle and towering in at 6’4”, he actually shares the height and look of the older, grizzled lead. This, however, comes at a cost. He’s a solid 7 years senior to previous actor Ryan Hurst. Bautista has continued training since retiring as a professional athlete. However, his propensity for handling the majority of his own stunts puts him in an even higher risk pool than his predecessor.
Food for Thought
Depending on how talks go, it will be interesting to see if Moore and production will risk any more actor-based stunt work. Working with their particular time constraints, making a hard requirement for stunt doubles would not be unheard of. Hurst’s injury came from a complex stunt gone wrong. Dave Bautista, in recent years, due to age and injuries, occasionally relies on stunt doubles for high-risk maneuvers. Whenever actors are committed to doing their own stunts, it adds a noticeable difference in fluid action scenes. Hopefully, a safe solution can be found, allowing Bautista to add his legendary physicality to the prospective role. But the real question remains: will Bautista have time to cultivate Kratos’s magnificent beard?
