Charles Dickens’ 1843 A Christmas Carol novella is a well-worn and heavily adapted tale about miser Ebenezer Scrooge. However, director Ti West (MaXXXine) and writer Nathaniel Halpern (Tales from the Loop) are promising a new spin on the material by telling it from Scrooge’s viewpoint.
Ebenezer just got its very first teaser trailer at San Diego Comic-Con.
Johnny Depp is almost unrecognizable as the titular character. He stars alongside Daisy Ridley as Emily Cratchit, Rupert Grint as Bob Cratchit, Sam Claflin as Fred, and Ian McKellen as Jacob Marley. Andrea Riseborough plays Ghost of Christmas Past, with Tramell Tillman as Ghost of Christmas Present, and Robert Strange as Ghost of Christmas Future.
The teaser did confirm that West takes the tale in a darker direction. But a story about an old, bitter man on a path to moral redemption is pretty dark to begin with. And it’s still more lighthearted than much of West’s previous work.
The first official poster was released yesterday ahead of the teaser. To keep his look a secret, the poster only shows the top third of Depp’s face, with the rest of the frame filled by a snow-covered top hat.
