Anne Hathaway recently shared an update on The Princess Diaries 3, confirming that the long-awaited sequel is still happening, even if it hit a few bumps along the way. According to Hathaway, the writing team had a major breakthrough with the story. However that breakthrough meant they had to do one thing that no one in film likes to do. They had to start over.

While that might sound discouraging, Hathaway assured fans that everyone involved feels confident they’re finally on the right path. Considering how beloved the original films are, it’s understandable that nobody wants to rush a return to Genovia unless it’s done right.
Released in 2001, The Princess Diaries introduced us to an awkward San Francisco teenager who discovered she was heir to the throne of Genovia. The sequel, The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, arrived in 2004 and cemented Mia Thermopolis as one of Disney’s most iconic characters.
The third film will be directed by Adele Lim, known for her work on Crazy Rich Asians, and producer Debra Martin Chase has previously expressed optimism about the project’s future. Author Meg Cabot has even read the latest script, calling it “amazing.”
Unfortunately, fans may need to remain patient a little longer. Hathaway is currently expecting her third child and balancing an incredibly busy slate of projects, meaning there is still no official release date or production schedule.
Still, after 25 years of waiting, what’s a little more time?
You can still enjoy watching The Princess Diaries and The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement by heading over to Disney+
