When my family moved from Los Angeles to Missouri, we knew we’d be giving up a few things. Better weather was an obvious one. What I didn’t expect to miss quite so much was IMAX. My husband on the other hand had already come to terms with this as he is much more a cinephile than I am.
Living in Southern California meant we were spoiled. Seeing a movie in true 70 mm IMAX wasn’t an annual event. It was just something you could do if a film warranted it. And, when filmmakers like Christopher Nolan release something new, it absolutely warrants it.
Now? If I want that same experience, I’m looking at a road trip. The closest true 70 mm IMAX theaters are in places like Indianapolis or Nashville, turning movie night into a weekend excursion.
And we’re far from alone.

The Odyssey has become a phenomenon, not just because it’s reportedly one of Nolan’s best films, but because it’s the first feature shot entirely with IMAX film cameras. With only about 25 theaters in the United States capable of projecting the movie in true IMAX 70 mm, fans across the country are packing their cars and crossing state lines for the experience.
Many say it’s worth every mile. For those of you looking for the closest IMAX to you that can play it as it’s meant to be seen, here is a list of every IMAX 70.
The following theaters are among the U.S. venues showing The Odyssey in IMAX 70 mm:
- AMC Lincoln Square 13 & IMAX — New York, NY
- Harkins Arizona Mills 25 & IMAX — Tempe, AZ
- AMC Metreon 16 & IMAX — San Francisco, CA
- Universal Cinema AMC at CityWalk Hollywood & IMAX — Universal City, CA
- TCL Chinese Theatre IMAX — Hollywood, CA
- Regal Edwards Ontario Palace & IMAX — Ontario, CA
- Regal Irvine Spectrum 21 & IMAX — Irvine, CA
- Esquire IMAX — Sacramento, CA
- Regal Hacienda Crossings & IMAX — Dublin, CA
- Regal LA Live & IMAX — Los Angeles, CA
- Cinemark Carefree Circle & IMAX — Colorado Springs, CO
- Regal Colorado Center & IMAX — Denver, CO
- AutoNation IMAX at Museum of Discovery & Science — Fort Lauderdale, FL
- Regal Mall of Georgia & IMAX — Buford, GA
- IMAX Theatre at Indiana State Museum — Indianapolis, IN
- Chrysler IMAX Dome Theatre — Detroit, MI
- Celebration! Cinema Grand Rapids North & IMAX — Grand Rapids, MI
- Cinemark Seven Bridges & IMAX — Woodridge, IL
- Brenden Palms 14 & IMAX — Las Vegas, NV
- Cinemark Tinseltown Rochester & IMAX — Rochester, NY
- Regal UA King of Prussia & IMAX — King of Prussia, PA
- Providence Place Cinemas 16 & IMAX — Providence, RI
- AMC Rivercenter 11 & IMAX — San Antonio, TX
- Cinemark 17 & IMAX — Dallas, TX
- Regal Opry Mills & IMAX — Nashville, TN
Still, if The Odyssey proves anything, it’s that audiences will show up when filmmakers give them a reason to. And if that means a six-hour round trip to Nashville, well, some movies deserve the journey.
