Warner Bros. and Legendary formally announced the sequel to A Minecraft Movie, titled A Minecraft Movie Squared, featuring Jack Black, Jason Momoa, and Kirsten Dunst.
The title is different from the one previously announced by Warner Bros. The film was described as A Minecraft Sequel by Warner Bros. at CinemaCon in April. It seems like the studio was listening to feedback, including all the online memes, and revealed the new name during Minecraft Live 2026.
The announcement was made on X. In addition to the post they also showed the sequel’s official logo. The Minecraft YouTube channel shared a video from TwitchCon Rotterdam. The title was officially revealed to fans. As well as a brief, behind-the-scenes look at the movie’s production.

Minecraft Competition Announced with a Special Movie Tie In
Along with the title announcement, Warner Bros. and Legendary hosted a competition. They invited Minecraft video game creators to build something unique. Winners will have their creations featured either within the film itself or during the end credits. The top creator will receive a private screening with their friends.
One of the bigger reveals tied to the announcement was a first look at Dunst’s character. Alex was only briefly teased in a post-credits scene in the original film. Though that is the first thought on anyone’s mind when they think of who Dunst could be playing. Alongside Steve, she is one of the primary default characters in the game, making this the first official look at how she will appear in live-action. She’s also very prominent in the animations for minecraft online.
During the livestream, Black teased what fans can expect, saying, “There is a lot of new in this movie. There’s a massive team hard at work to take this production to the next level. But we got some old friends returning as well.”

Filming is Currently Underway
Filming is currently underway in New Zealand under returning director Jared Hess. Hess co-wrote the screenplay alongside Chris Galletta.
Other returning cast members include Momoa as Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison, Danielle Brooks as Dawn, Jennifer Coolidge as Marlene, and Matt Berry as the voice of Nitwit. Berry’s role, however, is causing a lot of speculation. He said he’s not saying who he is playing. However, someone attempted to hand him a blue sweater vest on camera. “Steve would not be wearing that,” he said. People are speculating that he could be playing Herobrine, the infamous Minecraft urban legend villain.
