Louis C.K. to Debut New Stand-Up Special on Netflix

There was a time when Louis C.K. was a dominating force in the world of comedy. His stand-up specials were events to watch. His FX show Louis was drawing critical acclaim. He was popping up in various other shows and projects with a crazy amount of momentum. Ultimately, he was derailed by his own actions. Stories had circulated for some time regarding his treatment of women. We won’t go into them here. What we will go into is that Netflix is bringing him back for a comedy special.

    Past Apologies

It was back in 2017 when C.K.’s career blew up. Since then he’s been touring the comedy circuit but hasn’t had any material released outside of his own website. Additionally, his appearances in television and film have been extremely scarce. Netflix is set to change that this summer with the new special, “Ridiculous.” He’ll also be involved in Netflix’s comedy event, “Netflix is a Joke Fest” at the Hollywood Bowl on May 5th.

Because C.K. is still a draw in his touring, there’s little doubt that he’ll draw an audience on Netflix. The bigger question is whether or not a mass audience is willing to forgive him. C.K. apologized for his actions. Was it enough? Was it legitimate? Is he a new and better person? That’s ultimately a decision that can only be made by the individual. The fact that you can’t really address this special without mentioning it being the first one since his admissions is a sign unto itself. His past still looms large over his presence.

    Drawing an Audience

Other comedians have been embroiled in various scandals and still draw crowds and views. Dave Chappelle for example has been under fire for his political views and accusations of punching down at the Trans community. Many people have completely rejected him but he still commands an audience and viewership. Of course, he didn’t do the things that Louis C.K. has admitted to and that’s a big distinction. Again, it has to come down to whether the viewer believes he’s sincerely bettered himself. If they do, then they can see if he’s still funny when “Ridiculous” premieres on Netflix this summer.
