There have been many revivals and reboots announced over the last decade. These projects can be very hit or miss. Some of them turn out to be huge hits like King of the Hill. Others are massive misfires that get scrapped after the pilot is made. Remember that proposed Powerpuff Girls live-action revival? Yeah, neither do we. We had our eye on the proposed revival of Buffy the Vampire Slayer over the last couple of years. It looked like it had some powerful momentum behind it. Turns out, momentum doesn’t guarantee success as Hulu put a stake through its heart.

Sarah Michelle Gellar Reacts to the News
Earlier today, March 14th, 2026, reports were circulating that Hulu axed the potential series. Big names were attached to the project, including Buffy herself, Sarah Michelle Gellar. Set to be titled Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale, the pilot was directed by Academy Award winner, Chloé Zhao. In a quirky twist of fate, the news of the series not going forward is happening on the same weekend as the 2026 Academy Awards, where Zhao is nominated for Hamnet.
Gellar took to Instagram to announce her disappointment in the show not moving forward. She still took the opportunity to give praise to Zhao for helping the project even get as far as it did. “I want to thank Chloé Zhao because I never thought I would find myself back in Buffy’s stylish yet affordable boots.” Gellar would’ve been joined by a new Slayer, portrayed by Ryan Kiera Armstrong. We previously reported on how enthusiastic Gellar was about Armstrong’s performance. Regardless of the quality of the pilot, it’s a little heartbreaking when people put in this kind of work and effort, only for it not to come to fruition.

What Happened?
But why didn’t it? What happened to shoot down a pilot that had this much star power behind it? Some reports have speculated that the pilot didn’t quite stick the landing. It seems a bit more likely that maybe the overall enthusiasm for the series just wasn’t there. The Buffy franchise has continued long after its television series wrapped in the form of comics and an audio drama. We don’t know if or how this new series would’ve existed alongside those. It’s not as if Buffy fans have been starved for content because of all this.
More information may come out about the pilot as well as Hulu’s plan for the IP. We will continue to provide updates if we learn more.
