    The Ultimate Con Survival Guide: How to Keep Your HP High IRL

    We all know the drill. You’ve spent months perfecting your cosplay, you’ve mapped out the vendor hall, and you’ve got your badge ready. Whether you are heading to the Calgary Expo, Fan Expo, or a local gaming tournament, the excitement is real. But let’s be honest—con crud, dehydration, and exhaustion are the real final bosses of any convention weekend.

    Most of us are great at managing resources in an RPG, but when it comes to “In Real Life” (IRL) stamina, we often forget the basics. If you want to survive a three-day weekend without crashing, you need a strategy. Here is your guide to keeping your health bar full and avoiding the dreaded “game over” before Sunday even rolls around.

    1. The Inventory Management: What’s in Your Bag?

    In any game, inventory space is limited. In real life, you don’t want to be lugging around a 50lb backpack while trying to navigate a crowded aisle. However, there are a few “consumables” you should never leave home without.

    • Water (Mana Potions): Convention centers are notoriously dry and hot. Dehydration leads to headaches and fatigue, which will kill your mood faster than a lag spike. Bring a refillable bottle.
    • Power Bank: Your phone is your lifeline. Don’t be that person sitting on the floor next to a trash can because it’s the only outlet available.
    • Mini First Aid Kit: You don’t need a full trauma bag, but blisters from new boots and paper cuts from comic books happen. A few band-aids and painkillers are worth their weight in gold.

    2. Know Your Surroundings (Map Awareness)

    When you enter a new level, the first thing you do is check the map. The same logic applies to a massive convention center.

    Before you get distracted by the shiny merch and celebrity guests, take five minutes to locate the exits, the restrooms, and the quiet zones. If you or a friend starts feeling overwhelmed or anxious, knowing exactly where to go to decompress is a game-changer.

    This is also where basic safety knowledge comes in. Large crowds can be unpredictable. Being the person who knows what to do if someone faints in line or trips on a costume prop makes you the MVP of your group. In fact, many frequent con-goers are starting to realize that having a Coast2Coast First Aid Calgary certification under their belt isn’t just for lifeguards—it’s a massive asset for anyone navigating big events. Knowing how to recognize heat exhaustion or handle a minor injury ensures the fun doesn’t stop for you or your squad.

    3. The Stamina Bar: Rest and Nutrition

    We have all pulled an all-nighter for a raid, but trying to do that while walking 20,000 steps a day is a recipe for disaster.

    • Eat Real Food: Convention food is expensive and usually consists of pizza or burgers. Try to get at least one actual meal with vegetables. Your body needs fuel to keep moving.
    • The 6-2-1 Rule: It’s a classic for a reason. 6 hours of sleep, 2 meals, and 1 shower per day. Minimum. No exceptions.
    • Sit Down: If you see an empty chair, take it. Your feet will thank you later.

    4. Avoiding the “Con Crud” (Status Effects)

    “Con Crud” is the colloquial term for the inevitable cold or flu that sweeps through attendees after thousands of people share the same air for three days.

    Hygiene is your best defense. Wash your hands frequently, especially before eating. Hand sanitizer is great, but soap and water are better. Also, respect your fellow attendees. If you are feeling sick before the con starts, please stay home. Missing one year is better than getting your entire guild sick.

    5. The Buddy System (Party Mode)

    Never split the party! Okay, sometimes you have to, but generally, it’s safer and more fun to stick together.

    Set up a meeting point in case cell service goes down (which it often does in crowded halls). Keep an eye on each other. If your friend looks like they are about to drop from exhaustion, be the tank and shield them from the crowd while you get them some water.

    Final Thoughts

    Conventions are some of the best experiences in the world. They are a place to celebrate what we love, meet new friends, and escape reality for a bit. But just like any adventure, a little preparation goes a long way.

    By managing your inventory, watching your health bar, and looking out for your team, you ensure that your weekend is memorable for the right reasons. So pack smart, stay safe, and go get that loot!
