Casting is Underway for Sony’s “God of War” TV Show

Prime Video’s “God of War” television series is really starting to take shape. Emmy-winning director Frederick E.O. Toye (“Shōgun,” “The Boys”) will direct the first 2 episodes. He joins the previously announced showrunner, executive producer, and writer Ronald D. Moore (“Outlander”).

The show is based on the wildly popular PlayStation video game franchise of the same name. The series is currently in pre-production in Vancouver, and casting is reportedly underway.

The video games are heavily steeped in ancient mythology, and follows Kratos and Atreus, a father and son, who go on a journey to spread the ashes of Faye, their wife/mother. During their quest, Kratos tries to show Atreus how to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach Kratos how to be a better human.

    The Creative Team

As revealed by Moore to our EiC at San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC), the writers room also includes Naren Shankar (“The Expanse,” “For All Mankind“), Matthew Graham (“Life on Mars,” “Electric Dreams“), Joe Menosky (“The Orville,” “Star Trek: The Next Generation“), Tania Lotia (“The Witcher,” “Invincible“), Marc Bernardin (“Star Trek: Picard,” “Eyes of Wakanda“), and Stephanie Shannon (“For All Mankind,” “Outlander“).

“This is an exceptional group, it’s fun to be part of a writing team like this. Just like with ‘Outlander,’ I try to fill the room where half are fans, and the other half are new to the game,” Moore said. “That way, we can craft the show that can appeal to both people who love the game, and are encountering the world of ‘God of War’ for the first time.”

Executive producers for the show include Moore, Maril Davis, Cory Barlog, Shankar, Graham, Asad Qizilbash, Carter Swan, Hermen Hulst, Roy Lee, and Brad Van Arragon. Menosky, Bernardin, Lotia, Ben McGinnis, and Jeff Ketcham are attached as co-executive producers.

“God of War” series has already been greenlit for a two-season order. Obviously, this early into production, there is no expected release window. We’ll keep you posted on updates as the project develops.
