After leaving Konami to form his own studio, Hideo Kojima has gone all-in on his game “Death Stranding.” When the first game dropped in 2019, some of its elements of storytelling and gameplay were divisive, but in the years to follow it blossomed into something beyond a cult classic and to greater acclaim. Since the beginning, Kojima has envisioned a greater world for the franchise, including an animated series. And Now we know that animated series will land at Disney+.
With a working title of “Death Stranding Isolations,” the upcoming series was introduced to the public at Disney’s Asia Pacific Showcase. Kojima dropped in as the executive producer of the upcoming show with its director, Takayuki Sano. There was also a concept art reveal done by Ilya Kuvshinov, giving attendees more of a hint at what to expect.
Apparently Kojima and Disney have been talking about this collaboration for the last few years, dating back to 2023 with the documentary “Hideo Kojima: Connecting Worlds.” It’s an apt title for a creator who has long tried to push the medium of video games in a cinematic direction; Kojima’s love of cinema is a well-established fact. His hopes are that this can help bring the “Death Stranding” universe to people who don’t necessarily play video games. Naturally this will also be augmented by A24’s live-action film also on the horizon.
The plot of the upcoming animated series will break from the narrative of the games and feature different characters in a different story, while still set in the same world as the games. The official note from Disney doesn’t do much to shed light on the story other than to say, “The upcoming series will follow a young man and woman as they set out on an adventure.” That sentence describes only about millions of stories, but at least this one is set in the “Death Stranding” universe, which will make it all the more intriguing and probably terrifying for them.
