Paramount+ Cancels “Dexter: Original Sin,” Taking Back S2 Renewal

In April, Paramount+ announced it would be renewing “Dexter: Original Sin” for a second season. Yesterday, they did whatever the corporate version of yelling “psych!” is, by revoking the order. Like most current issues with Paramount, this confusing decision is being pinned on its recent merger with Skydance.

We know “South Park” creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone are certainly fans of this coperate blending, calling it a “Shitshow.”

“Original Sin” debuted in December 2024 and had its series finale in February. Despite the April renewal announcement, nothing had been shot, and no production dates were even scheduled. Which could sound like Paramount never actually planned on renewing it, but it was probably a precaution in case the Skydance merger went sideways.

    More “Dexter” Though?

Even though the prequel series “Original Sin” won’t return, there are reports the franchise will be moving forward. A writers room may soon be opening for season two of “Dexter: Resurrection,” a followup to the original “Dexter” series and “Dexter: New Blood.”

Given what just happened, we understand fan hesitation about the future of the franchise. However, this project does have some key differences setting it apart from “Original Sin.”

The biggest of which being series veteran Michael C. Hall returned as Dexter Morgan. Whereas the canceled series had Patrick Gibson playing a younger version of the character, with Hall both executive producing and providing the character’s internal monologue. The prequel also only holds a 70% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, with “Resurrection” pulling in a 94%.

A second season of “Resurrection” is NOT yet confirmed, but it does seem like a safer bet for the company than “Original Sin.”

We’ll keep you posted on updates about all things “Dexter” as these various projects are developed… or not.
