The Tony Award-winning cultural phenomenon “Hamilton” is turning 10 this year, and is finally getting its big screen debut. In 2020, Disney bought a filmed version of the stage musical about the life of former president Alexander Hamilton for $75 million. The company planned to give it a theatrical release in 2021, but COVID-19 delayed those plans until now. This performance ultimately appeared on Disney+, where it won two Emmys.

“Hamilton” is now set to hit theaters in America, Canada, and Puerto Rico on September 5th! It’ll hit the big screen in the UK and Ireland on September 26th, and Australia and New Zealand on November 13th. The new release dates even have a spiffy new trailer to go along with them.

    “Hamilton”

The musical, created by its lead actor Lin-Manuel Miranda, is inspired by the book “Alexander Hamilton” by Ron Chernow. It opened on Broadway in 2015 and became a massive success, garnering an impressive 11 Tony Awards.

Original Broadway cast members include Miranda as Alexander Hamilton, Leslie Odom Jr. as Aaron Burr, Daveed Diggs as Marquis de Lafayette/Thomas Jefferson, Renée Elise Goldsberry as Angelica Schuyler, Jonathan Groff as King George, Christopher Jackson as George Washington, Jasmine Cephas Jones as Peggy Schuyler/Maria Reynolds, Okieriete Onaodowan as Hercules Mulligan/James Madison, Anthony Ramos as John Laurens/Philip Hamilton, and Phillipa Soo as Eliza Hamilton.

It is produced by Miranda, director Thomas Kail, and Jeffrey Seller. Sander Jacobs and Jill Furman will executive produce.

“When we filmed Hamilton, we wanted to try to capture the feeling of being in the Richard Rodgers Theatre during that first year on Broadway,” Kail said. “and we’re thrilled that audiences will now have the opportunity to experience it on the big screen.”

You can catch “Hamilton” in theaters on September 5th. In the meantime, you can check out the new trailer below:
