Maybe we were all in Odin sleep, but tt’s been a while since we heard anything concrete about Sony and Amazon’s upcoming “God of War” live-action series. Based on the HUGELY popular and multi award-winning franchise from Santa Monica Studio, this adaptation was officially announced back in December of 2022, taking it’s cues from the 2018 and

Since then, there have been some shakeups, such as showrunner / head writer Rafe Judkins (“Wheel of Time“) leaving the project. Then in October of 2024, Ronald D. Moore (“Battlestar Galactica,” “Outlander,” “For All Mankind“) took over as showrunner / head writer. Which brings us to today’s exciting and exclusive bit of intel!

Mary Anne Butler moderates Ronald D. Moore at San Diego Comic-Con 2025

As revealed by Moore during a spotlight panel at San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC), the writers room for Sony’s “God of War” includes Moore, Naren Shankar (“The Expanse,” “For All Mankind“), Matthew Graham (“Life on Mars,” “Electric Dreams“), Joe Menosky (“The Orville,” “Star Trek: The Next Generation“), Tania Lotia (“The Witcher,” “Invincible“), Marc Bernardin (“Star Trek: Picard,” “Eyes of Wakanda“), and Stephanie Shannon (“For All Mankind,” “Outlander“).

“This is an exceptional group, it’s fun to be part of a writing team like this. Just like with ‘Outlander,’ I try to fill the room where half are fans, and the other half are new to the game,” Moore said. “That way, we can craft the show that can appeal to both people who love the game, and are encountering the world of ‘God of War’ for the first time.”

While we don’t know other details yet, we do know that game franchise creative director Cory Barlog is heavily involved as an executive producer for the television series. [Talk about having the perfect loremaster!]

An early logline for the live-action tv series reads:

“The series follows Kratos, the God of War, who, after exiling himself from his blood-soaked past in ancient Greece, hangs up his weapons forever in the Norse realm of Midgard. When his beloved wife dies, Kratos sets off on a dangerous journey with his estranged son to spread her ashes from the highest peak—his wife’s final wish. Kratos soon realizes the journey is an epic quest in disguise, one which will test the bonds between father and son, and force Kratos to battle new Gods and monsters for the fate of the world.”

Obviously when we hear more about this project- like casting, and whether or not Emmy-winning composer Bear McCreary will be handling the series score- we’ll let you know!
