Co-Founder of Pirate Bay Carl Lundström Killed in Plane Crash

You may not know the name Carl Lundström, but if you’ve ever downloaded files illegally online (which you should NEVER do), then you probably have come across the website he co-founded. The Pirate Bay has been one of the largest sources of file-sharing online for decades now. To some, it’s a bastion of anti-capitalist freedom. To others, it’s a bane to copyright laws and regulations. And lets face it- illegal activity. But after a number of takedown attempts over the years, The Pirate Bay continues to live on.

Sadly, the same can not be said for Lundström, who passed away earlier this week.

Lundström, in addition to being a businessman, was also a pilot. The small aircraft he was flying crashed into the Slovenian mountains and his death was confirmed on Tuesday the 11th. Reports indicate the fatal accident occurred the day before. Poor weather was cited as one of the potential causes for the crash and may have resulted in disorientation. The plane was found to have crashed into a wooden cabin on the Velika Planina mountain.

The Pirate Bay benefitted from Lundström’s resources when his company Rix Telecom provided equipment and services to it. Users know it helps provide torrent links to millions of files that users continue to seed and download. Because the files are not stored on The Pirate Bay itself, it has attempted to skirt copyright law since it’s “only connecting users together to share the files between themselves.” This wasn’t enough to shield him from prosecution when a 2009 trial found him in violation of copyright law. A few months in prison and 32 million Swedish Krona later, and he was out and about again.

Fans of The Pirate Bay may be less pleased to know that outside of helping to establish the website, Lundström was also apparently heavily involved in the politics of the Swedish far-right. What can we say, never meet your heroes. Still, his legacy lives on in the sense that The Pirate Bay remains one of, if not the biggest name in file sharing.

Carl Lundström was 64 years old.
