What are DMA Cheats and how do they work?

It’s 2025 and anti-cheats have only become stronger over the years. Anti-cheats have evolved from being a simple app that runs in the background to catch macro scripts into full-blown programs of their own. They have become so large and intrusive that gamers worry more about the anti-cheats rather than the cheaters within their game. As expected, cheats too have evolved over the years to battle their oppressor, growing from being a simple software into a hardware-based cheat system that’s impossible to detect. DMA hacks are the latest hype and being hardware-based makes them impossible to detect even through kernel-level anti-cheats such as Vanguard. This article answers the most common questions such as what are DMA cheats and how do they work?

    Why do cheaters cheat?

Indeed, cheating is often portrayed as a villainous act within gaming communities, but this is not always the case. Players might cheat just to ruin other people’s fun online and during tourneys, but a majority of players use cheats because they have no other option.

Let’s look at a few common scenarios where players have admitted to using cheats as they were left with no other alternative. The most common reason players use DMA cheats is to escape Elo hell. Elo hell is a region within the ranking systems of various online games where players will find it impossible to traverse past. There are many reasons for the existence of Elo hell, but the most common reason is it being the region within the ranking system where subpar players get equally matched with better players. This makes it impossible to escape as the system attempts to keep the player’s win percentage to 50% by matching them with worse teammates as soon as the win rate rises. Elo hell has been debunked by many players, but gamers who play online games daily know it exists! A good example of an Elo hell is the 3000-4000 MMR region of Dota 2 ranked. Players get stuck in this region for months on end and boost past onto the high 4000s and 5000s as soon they get past the initial hurdle.

Players who just don’t want to deal with the complications and unfairness resort to more drastic measures such as DMA cheating. This is mostly because the company they depend on doesn’t fix the core issues within the system

    What are DMA Cheats?

Unlike most cheating software, DMA cheats are not entirely based upon a single software. Instead, DMA hacks are a combination of hardware, software, and firmware that work together to create a cheating system that’s entirely undetectable even by modern anti-cheat systems.

DMA stands for direct memory access and the main hardware component of a DMA cheat system is its DMA card. This card allows a PC to read memory on another PC! In summary, a cheater requires a second PC, as the DMA system would not function without it.

The firmware is what makes the DMA system invisible to the anti-cheat. Good firmware is what makes or breaks the cheat system. You can have the best DMA card on the market that reads memory flawlessly, but if the firmware is trash, you’d be getting the ban hammer in no time. Most DMA cheats require custom firmware for every game. A firmware built for a Valorant cheat that focuses on legal conflict space will not battle well against EAC on Fortnite! This is why cheaters often depend on highly dependable marketplaces such as SSZ to provide them with the firmware. This essentially makes them invisible to the anti-cheat in a particular game.

The software is the front-end of the cheat system and it allows you to pick which cheats should be applied to the game being played. In simpler terms, it allows computer noobs to hack without interacting with the firmware on a deeper level. Gone are the days when hackers stared at black screens with green text running down!

    How do DMA cheats work?

Let’s keep it simple and limit the technical aspects to only where necessary as it would give everyone reading a proper idea of what happens within a DMA cheat system. DMA hacks require two PCs, and the DMA cheat runs on a second PC which is not your gaming PC. The second PC is dedicated to hosting only the cheat and the DMA card.

The DMA card on the external PC will read your game’s data and quickly transfer it to be processed in the dedicated PC. The data read is used to create the “hack” which can be anything from a wallhack to an aimbot. The instructions for the hack are sent over to the gaming pc via a network overlay or second screen.

Since no suspicious code is being run on the gaming PC, the anti-cheats installed have no way of detecting the DMA hacks running on the external computer. The DMA hacks become essentially invisible to the anti-cheat as long as the DMA system doesn’t write and only reads data from the gaming PC. This is why cheaters must purchase their firmware from reputable marketplaces.

    Why aren’t they popular?

DMA cheats are rising in popularity, but their use has been limited due to the expensive setup. A cheater needs to have a second PC, DMA card, firmware, and other accessories( depending on the cheats being run).

    Conclusion

Most cheaters use DMA cheats to battle against a broken system that abuses player efforts, hence their dedication to acquiring expensive hardware and firmware. While anti-cheat continues to improve, it’s still unlikely that it will ever be capable of detecting well-setup DMA hacks.
