We have exciting news about Oscar-winner Sir Christopher Nolan’s upcoming adaptation of “The Odyssey.” It seems like Emmy-winner Jon Bernthal (“The Bear“) may be joining the cast. He’d join the already announced cast of Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, and Charlize Theron.

“Christopher Nolan’s next film ‘The Odyssey’ is a mythic action epic shot across the world using brand new IMAX film technology,” Universal tweeted to announce the project. “The film brings Homer’s foundational saga to IMAX film screens for the first time.” They also revealed a possible release date, which would be a tight turn around.

The studio hasn’t confirmed Bernthal’s casting yet. We’ll next see him in Disney+’s “Daredevil: Born Again,” as he’s reprising the role of Frank Castle, aka The Punisher. And, in “The Accountant 2” alongside Ben Affleck.

Nolan’s film will adapt the 8th-century BCE Greek poem penned by Homer. It serves as a foundation for most Western literature, so you know, no pressure. The prose tells the tale of Odysseus, King of Ithaca, and his journey home after the Trojan War. He faces untold perils all to return to his wife, Penelope. Adaptations of this story can be seen all throughout pop culture. Namely, reenactments of scenes like his encounters with the Cyclops Polyphemus, the Sirens, and the witch-goddess Circe.

“The Odyssey” is expected to start shooting next month. We’ll keep you posted on updates about the project as they become available. Universal dated the film for a July 17th, 2026 release.
