The “Harry Potter” franchise remains one of the biggest media empires in the world. Sure its been a while since the mainline books and films wrapped up, but the franchise has continued through games, merchandise, and an upcoming HBO series. The show is eyeing a 2027 release window, and is currently in the casting phase. Nothing official has been announced yet, but sources are indicating that the adaptation may have found its Severus Snape.

Paapa Essiedu in The Lazarus Project

Paapa Essiedu is a British actor who may be most known for his appearances in “I May Destroy You” and “The Lazarus Project.” He’s also a Shakespearean stage performer, having played titular characters like Romeo and Hamlet. This is something he shares in common with the late, great, Alan Rickman. Rickman was also a tremendous stage actor.

    Warner Bros. Pictures

Snape is a pivotal character in the Potter Universe, as anyone who is invested in the story knows, but has also been a fan favorite. While the character himself was complex and multi-faceted, there’s no doubt that Rickman’s performance helped imbed the character into the hearts and minds of millions around the globe. HBO is hopeful that this new “Harry Potter” adaptation will do for the upcoming generation of kids what the original films did two decades ago.

HBO has declined to comment on the casting of Essiedu. The HBO says they’ll “only confirm details as we finalize deals.” It’s a high profile project, so it makes sense the network and its parent company Warner Bros. Discovery will only want to make these announcements on their own time table. Since the series is said to be a very faithful adaptation of the books, a role like Snape is going to be pretty significant.

Essiedu is a solid choice and that Shakespearean background will only help bring the mechanization of Snape on screen. We look forward to bringing you more information if this casting is fully confirmed and as more announcements come down the pipeline.
