It has been confirmed there will be a sequel to Dreamworks’ latest animated hit. After pulling in $100 million globally, “The Wild Robot” director Chris Sanders (“Lilo & Stitch”) confirmed a sequel is in development at DreamWorks Animation.

“100% yes there are absolutely plans for a second one,” Sanders told Deadline.

    “The Wild Robot”

“The Wild Robot” is an adaptation of Peter Brown’s award-winning 2016 book of the same name. In the film Oscar-winner Lupita Nyong’o (“A Quiet Place: Day One”) voices robot ROZZUM unit 7134, but you can call them Roz. When the machine is shipwrecked on an uninhabited island it must adapt to its new harsh environment. Roz triumphs and begins to build relationships with the animals on the island, eventually adopting an orphaned gosling.

Brown’s novel was the first in a trilogy with “The Wild Robot Escapes” being the follow-up. There is no word at this time if the film will follow the book series or spin-off in its own direction. But we do know that three-time Oscar nominee Sanders will continue to write and direct for the second film.

The cast also includes Pedro Pascal (“The Last of Us”), Catherine O’Hara (“Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice”), Stephanie Hsu (“The Fall Guy”), and Bill Nighy (“The First Omen”). It is unknown if any of these performers will return for the sequel this early into the production process. Producer Jeff Hermann is already attached to the project.

We’ll keep you posted on updates about “The Wild Robot” sequel as they become available. You can catch the first film in theaters.
