We’ve got some big news out of San Diego Comic-Con for all the Whovians out there. Disney Branded Television and the BBC have confirmed the long-rumored “The War Between the Land and the Sea” series is happening! It will be a five-part series starring Russell Tovey and Gugu Mbatha-Raw (“Loki“).

However, Tovey and Mbatha-Raw will not be reprising their original roles in the series.

“They have both been in Doctor Who before, but they’re not playing the same parts,” Russell T Davies, “Doctor Who” showrunner and executive producer, said. The show will also have returning cast members Jemma Redgrave as Kate Lethbridge-Stewart and Alexander Devrient as Colonel Ibrahim.

The main focus of “Land and the Sea” will be villains known as Sea Devils, first introduced in 1972. So when this fearsome, ancient species emerges from the ocean and dramatically reveals themselves to humanity, it sets off an international crisis. With the entire population at risk, UNIT steps into action as the land and sea wage war.

“There’s a race that lives beneath the oceans,” said Davies during the Comic-Con panel. “It’s war on an epic scale, and it’s got a tremendous cast.”

The spinoff is co-written by Davies and fellow “Doctor Who” writer Pete McTighe with series alumni Dylan Holmes-Williams directing. “I’m so lucky to work with such a magnificent cast. And this is a huge, muscular, thrilling drama which will shake The Who universe to its foundations,” he adds. “When the Doctor’s not in town, the whole of humanity is in trouble,” Davies said in a statement.

There is currently no set release date for “The War Between the Land and the Sea,” but it’s expected to begin filming sometime next month. We’ll keep you posted on updates about this project as it develops. The latest season of “Doctor Who” is currently streaming exclusively on Disney+ with older seasons available on Max, Brit Box, and Tubi.
