Jack Black is ‘Ready’ For a “School of Rock” Sequel

In 2003, Richard Linklater’s “School of Rock” hit theaters. The movie tells the story of struggling musician Dewey Finn (Jack Black) lying his way into temping… uh substitute teaching. During his stint as an unqualified educator, he convinces his class of 4th graders to form a rock band. Almost 21 years later, Black says he’s ready to rock again for a sequel of the family-friendly hit.

“I wish there’d be a School of Rock 2 Electric Boogaloo,” Black said. “I’m ready.” A tongue-in-cheek reference to the 1984 film “Breakin’ 2: Electric Boogaloo.” He does have one stipulation, however.

Original writer Mike White (“White Lotus”) HAS to pen the sequel. “Mike White wrote the first one, and he’s a genius,” Black gushed. “We’d have to have Mike White back in the saddle. But he’s real busy right now with White Lotus, the best show on TV.”

    Upcoming Projects

And he is right, HBO’s “White Lotus” heading into 3rd season next year is probably keeping White swamped. But it’s not like Black has been taking it easy either. The actor recently starred in “Kung Fu Panda 4” and will appear in the upcoming film adaptation of “Borderlands.”

The Staying Power of “School of Rock”

Even with the energetic entertainer’s various projects he never really left “School of Rock” behind. In October, he sang the Black Sabbath classic, “Mr. Crowley” for Rage Against The Machine guitarist Tom Morello’s mom, Mary Morello, for her 100th birthday. His vocals are backed by a band of pre-teens that includes Mary’s grandson, Roman Morello, on guitar.

If that’s not a real-life “School of Rock,” we don’t know what is. While the film still lacks an official sequel it did spawn a Nickelodeon series that ran from 2016 to 2018. Along with a Broadway production in 2015 composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Glenn Slater.

We’ll keep you posted on updates about a “School of Rock” sequel if/when they become available.
