In today’s globalised and interconnected world, booming digitalisation is a catalyst amplifying the growth of international trade. Be it the manufacturing or service sector, digitisation has entirely transformed nearly every aspect of multiple industries on a major scale, which has somehow helped these industries achieve major milestones in the past few years.

International shipping has also witnessed a major infrastructural revamp in the backdrop of a technological boom globally. Advanced developments in new-age technology like blockchain, IoT, Artificial Intelligence, predictive analytics, augmented reality, etc., have opened up new avenues for addressing persistent supply chain challenges and obstacles,  and unravelled new areas of scope for logistics companies in India and abroad.

Digitalisation has not only touched the shipping and logistics industry but also reformed the world economies by the force of interconnectedness. Let’s explore several aspects of digital transformation within the global shipping arena and the impact it is having on Indian logistics in this comprehensive blog.

Digitalisation As The Force Of Transformation In International Shipping

Digitalisation is like a superhero force that’s changing the game in international shipping. Imagine traditional shipping methods such as old-school maps and paper logs, causing delays and confusion. Now, with digitalisation, it’s like upgrading to GPS and smartphones.

The adoption of advanced technologies such as blockchain, the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence, and data analytics has streamlined various aspects of maritime operations. Ships can communicate seamlessly, track routes in real time, and handle paperwork digitally. This not only speeds up the whole process but also reduces errors and costs.

Automated processes and smart logistics solutions enhance the accuracy of data management, reducing errors and delays. Furthermore, digitalisation optimises route planning, vessel maintenance, and cargo tracking, leading to cost savings and improved sustainability. With increased transparency and connectivity, the industry is experiencing a major shift towards a more agile, responsive, and technologically advanced future.

How Digitalisation Is Reshaping Indian Logistics?

Digitalisation is playing a pivotal role in reshaping the landscape of logistics in India. Adopting advanced technologies is bringing about transformative changes, making the supply chain more efficient, transparent, and responsive. One significant impact is the integration of digital platforms and software solutions, which facilitate end-to-end visibility in logistics operations.

Let’s look at some of the booming technologies which are redefining Indian logistics in the backdrop of international shipping:

    1. Blockchain

Blockchain technology has gained attention and is being explored for its potential applications in various industries, including logistics. It can provide a transparent and immutable ledger for recording and tracking the movement of goods across the supply chain.

Blockchain enables end-to-end traceability, allowing stakeholders to trace the origin and journey of a product through the supply chain. Its decentralised and cryptographic nature enhances the security of data, in addition to fostering collaboration and real-time visibility across the entire supply chain.

    1. Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning

Imagine a delivery truck that can decide the best route by learning from past traffic patterns. That’s what AI and ML can do, making deliveries faster and saving on fuel. AI and ML analyze a lot of data to predict what might happen in the future. For example, they can forecast how much of a product will be needed, helping companies plan better.

These technologies help companies keep track of their products in real time. They can predict when items will run out, avoiding both shortages and overstock situations.

AI and ML can automate repetitive tasks, making things faster and more accurate. This could be anything from processing paperwork to managing inventory levels. Supply chains are always changing and these technologies are like smart assistants that can adapt and learn from these changes, helping companies stay flexible and responsive.

    1. Internet of Things(IoT)

The Internet of Things (IoT) plays a significant role in revolutionising logistics by connecting physical objects to the digital world. IoT devices, like sensors and GPS trackers, are attached to shipments and vehicles. This allows logistics companies to track the location of goods and vehicles in real-time. It’s like having a live map of where everything is at any given moment.

IoT sensors can monitor the condition of goods during transportation. For example, they can track temperature, humidity, and other environmental factors. This ensures that sensitive products like food or pharmaceuticals are transported under the right conditions.

IoT is redefining the end-to-end tracking and monitoring of supply chains with innovative approaches such as geo-fencing, geo-tagging, and proximity alerts.

    1. Augmented Reality

There are certain security risks associated with high-value consignments, such as hijacking in the shipping industry. With augmented reality and facial recognition technology, protected deliveries within logistical operations are being made possible. With interior navigation and building identification, last-mile delivery is also getting better. In the same way, the integration of augmented reality into supply chain management is also improving warehouse management and inventory handling.

    1. Autonomous Vehicles and Drones

The future of logistics is becoming closer thanks to e-vehicles like drones, ghost cargo ships (autonomous ships), and self-driving trucks. This innovation is expected to help with last-mile delivery, warehousing, and transportation while saving up to 20% on fuel expenses.

Given the growing number of sector-wide applications, India introduced the Drone Liberalisation Policy in 2021 to accelerate the commercial and industrial use of drones. The Indian government has authorised the production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme for drones and drone parts in addition to pushing for a policy change. The plan banned the importation of drones to aid with homegrown manufacture. To streamline their operations, logistics companies are now considering the rapid manufacturing of drones in India.

What The Future holds For The Indian Logistics Industry?

The world is rapidly moving towards digital transformation, finding instant solutions to the challenges and obstacles faced in multiple industries. But this transformation doesn’t eliminate the likelihood of new challenges which will be brought up in today’s era of digitalisation.

While the Indian logistics and shipping industry holds great potential for the future, some of the bottlenecks continue to persist, which needs to be addressed at the earliest to fully utilise the potential of the country’s logistics sector. India is all set to lead the international shipping landscape with its booming technological advancements, tech-enabled shipping aggregators like NimbusPost, and digitisation will entirely impact this journey ahead.
