Again, filmmaker Francis Lawrence is teasing us with “Constantine 2,” a follow-up to the 2005 superhero movie starring Keanu Reeves. Despite some major delays on the long-gestating sequel, it seems that things are starting to get moving.
The biggest hurdle is the now-resolved writers’ strike. But now that writers are back to work, Lawrence is once again meeting with Reeves. Given that “Constantine” is based on the DC/Vertigo Comic “Hellblazer,” rights to the character have also been an issue.
“So Constantine 2 got obviously held up by the writers strike,” Lawrence told Gamespot. “And we had to jump through a bunch of hurdles to get control of the character again, because other people had control of the Vertigo stuff. We have control.”
“Keanu and Akiva Goldsman and I have been in meetings and have been hashing out what we think the story is going to be,” Lawrence said. “And there’s more meetings of those that have to happen–the script has to be written–but really hoping that we get to do Constantine 2, and make a real rated R version of it.”
The first “Constantine” film also starred Rachel Weisz, Shia LaBeouf, Tilda Swinton, Pruitt Taylor Vince, Djimon Hounsou, Gavin Rossdale, Peter Stormare, Max Baker, Francis Guinan, José Zúñiga, Jesse Ramirez, April Grace, and Tanoia Reed. There is no word on if anyone aside from Reeves will be reprising their roles.
