“Daredevil: Born Again” Finds New Showrunners

Super-hero TV series are the norm in the current landscape. But one of the first to kickstart the success of them was Netflix’s “Daredevil” starring Charlie Cox. Gritty and violent in a way that felt mostly real, the series enjoyed a three season run before its cancellation. But now Marvel Studios are reviving the series with “Daredevil: Born Again.” Or at least they were before the writers and actors strike. During that time, the series has done a complete 180 in terms of plans. Including being handed off to new showrunners.

Dario Scardapane has taken on the task of showrunner for the series. Known for “Daredevil” spin-off series “The Punisher” and “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan,” Scardapane has significant skills in grit. Which is the direction we expect this series to take, a return to the tone the series contained on Netflix.

Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead have also been brought on to co-direct the series. Both have had experience with Marvel Studios, as they’ve just wrapped up directing episodes of “Loki” season 2.

Putting The Devil In The Details

While there are some scenes that will be kept for the revamp of the series, the new direction means starting again. Marvel Studios made their tv series much like it’s movies in the past. Now, they’re going back to fundamentals. Meaning pilot episodes and singular showrunners, instead of a revolving door of big wigs. More importantly, referring to a series bible to help keep consistency. Something that sounds a bit silly to have abandoned if we’re honest. The creative shift is encouraging.

Many of the current Marvel Studios series are too safe. And while they’re such a thing as being overly-gritty, “Daredevil” managed to straddle the line between grit and comic book fantasy. Hopefully the new series will hearken back to making danger feel real. While also giving us the hope that the hero prevails the way comic books do.
