“The Kingsman” helmer Matthew Vaughn is expressing interest in rebooting the original “Star Wars” trilogy. Should he be given the opportunity [pls no], we could see a whole new cast portraying the beloved characters of the 1977 and 1980s films. We aren’t sure how to feel about this idea.

Matthew Vaughn on set of “The King’s Man” 20th Century Studios, Disney

“For me, doing a ‘Star Wars‘ movie is to play with the characters that I loved,” Vaughn told the “Happy, Sad, Confused” podcast. “If they said to me, ‘Do you want to reboot ‘Star Wars‘ and actually have Luke Skywalker, Solo and Vader and do your version of it?’ Everyone would day you’re an idiot to try, but that would excite me… Why are the characters so hallowed that from 1977 that you can’t re-do it for a new audience?”

Vaughn feels that “Star Wars” is about “the Skywalker family,” and that Lucasfilm and Disney have “strayed from that story.” He thinks by leaving the original group of characters, the companies are “going in the wrong direction.” Vaughn did give praise to the various series from Disney, but thinks they are missing “an epic new film.”

Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy has already confirmed a reboot is not in the plans anytime soon. The studio is focused on expanding the universe built by George Lucas, looking past the Skywalker saga. There is no interest in telling new stories with new actors as the iconic characters. Kennedy’s comments came after the negative reception to “Solo: A Star Wars Story.” “We also can’t go do something with Luke Skywalker that isn’t Mark Hamill,” Kennedy said.

Vaughn’s next upcoming project is the ensemble thriller film, “Argylle.” It stars Dua Lipa, Henry Cavill, Bryce Dallas Howard, Sam Rockwell, Bryan Cranston, Catherine O’Hara, John Cena, Arianna DeBose, and Samuel L. Jackson. The film follows Argylle (Cavill), a fictional super spy created by writer Elly Conway (Howard). Her life gets turned upside down as real spies begin hunting her down after her new book hits a little too close to home. “Argylle” is set to hit theaters February 2nd, 2024.
