Animated series “Lackadaisy” will be starting with their first season after raising $1 million in less than a week! The funds will be used to create a first season consisting of 5 episode. Iron Circus Animation, the producer for the show, started a new crowdfunding campaign and raised more than enough funds. The campaign’s original goal was $125,000, but the viral success of the pilot episode helped earn more than the company expected.

“Lackadaisy” is a prohibition-era webcomic by Tracy Butler, animated by Iron Circus Animation. The pilot was directed by Fable Siegel. Within 4 months of being released, the episode has earned over 10 million views on YouTube. Following the success, the company launched a new crowdfunding campaign on July 25th. Within six hours, over $300,000 was donated by fans, the $1 million milestone was reached in less than a week. The film crew has promised that any excess funding will go towards future animation.

The pilot follows the trio of Rocky, Ivy, and “Freckle” as they attempt to secure some product for their employer. The operation quickly falls apart as a rival gang attempts to take their supply, leading to a shootout in a quarry. Upon their return to the underground speakeasy Lackadaisy, viewers can see how difficult times have gotten. The owner, Miss Mitzi May is still mourning the previous owner, her deceased husband Atlas. Since his death, other gangs have made the leftover crew’s lives difficult.

The animation style reminds one of the 1997 animated film, “Cats Don’t Dance.” The themes of struggle and jazz music are definitely appealing. The small bit of gun violence may not be suited to some viewers, but can be expected in the prohibition-era setting. Personally I can’t wait to see how the season will go once it airs, until then I will be reading the webcomic.

The crowdfunding is ongoing through BackersKit and if you would like to contribute, you can do so here.
