Have you ever wondered why we all hate Nickelback so much? A new documentary “Hate to Love: Nickelback, directed by Leigh Brooks, will explore the band’s rise to the top of the charts. And subsequent backlash the Canadian act receives despite their wild success.

The documentary will premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF)  in September. “Nickelback is one of the most successful acts in music history — they’re also the number one band haters love to hate. This intimate portrait surveys the Canadian stadium rockers’ rollercoaster career,” TIFF’s website reads.

This is not Brooks’ first foray into making a documentary about a controversial band. 2022’s “The Sound of Scars” centers around Life of Agony and 2017’s “Terrorvision: Wired Up and Scary” focuses on Terrorvision. Both of these films help land him this Nickelback documentary which was a long and tedious undertaking.

“Wow. 6 years filming the Nickelback doc and today was the last day,” Brooks wrote on LinkedIn in June. “Nickelback and everyone one of the Nickelteam are fine fine people. Eternally grateful the band let us document this amazing film. There were times I didn’t think this day would come, and although it feels like a freight train grinding to a halt, I’m really excited for what is pulling up at the station as we speak.”

The band everyone loves to hate is currently on a North American tour that runs through the beginning of October. You can pick up tickets here. You can also check out the trailer for “Hate to Love: Nickelback” below:
