“Jeopardy!” Delayed- Champions Refuse to Cross Picket Line

“Jeopardy! Tournament of Champions” is officially delayed, as at least seven contestants have refused to cross WGA picket lines. 13-time show winner Ray Lalonde was the first to speak out against filming as a supporter of the ongoing strike. Rumors of producers recycling old material to film the season becoming credible helped strengthen Lalonde’s choice.

“Jeopardy!” has already been viewed in a negative light for undermining the WGA. Show host, Ken Jennings crossed the picket line to finish taping the final episodes of season 39. This came after co-host Mayim Bialik refused to do the tapings herself.

Since Lalonde chose to stand with WGA union members, other champions have come out in support as well. The concept of competing in the tournament with recycled clues does not sit well with contestants. Some feel that would not be fun, but all agree they want to support strikers. One contestant, Dan Wohl, suggested doing their own unofficial tournament. Proceeds made from their version would be donated as part of a fundraiser for the WGA.

I am here for this show of solidarity. It may be a small win, but the support surely means a lot to WGA union strikers.

The WGA strike began back in May, with SAG-AFTRA joining them on strike earlier this month. There is no word on how long these strikes will last. Hopefully the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) will get with the program and meet the unions’ demands.

Producers released a statement confirming the delay and denied claims of reusing material to film season 39. “Jeopardy!” season 39 filming has also been delayed due to the strike.
