CosMc, alien from the late 1980s McDonald’s commercials, is getting its own spinoff restaurant. McDonald’s executives announced the spinoff restaurant will happen in select locations in early 2024. This took place during their second-quarter earnings call, Thursday July 27th. More information will be released during the company’s Investor Day in December this year.
“CosMc’s is a small format concept with all the DNA of McDonald’s, but with its own unique personality,” McDonald’s CEO Chris Kempczinski said.

During the earnings call, executives remarked how well the quarter did thanks to Grimace. Grimace was brought back into the spotlight for his 52nd birthday back in June. His birthday meal, specifically the milkshake, went viral on social media. This boom in social media response drove traffic and sales for U.S. based restaurants way up. “This quarter, if I’m being honest, the theme was Grimace,” Kemczinski said.
CosMc is an alien mascot from outer space who constantly craves McDonald’s food. The choice to give this alien its own restaurant is an interesting one. CosMc’s will be tested in a handful of locations with “limited geography.”
McDonald’s opening a spinoff restaurant was not on my 2023 Bingo card. For some reason I’m picturing this restaurant with old arcade space wallpaper. I’m definitely curious as to the theme for the menu. The concept of having McDonald’s DNA, but still maintaining one’s own identity sounds tricky.
While there are no set dates and locations for CosMc’s at this time, more information is planned to be shared in December.
