Elon Musk Announces Twitter ‘Rebranding’ to X

Twitter owner Elon Musk is saying bye, bye birdie to the platform’s famous logo with a complete rebranding. He plans to replace the name and logo with the letter ‘X.’ While the Tesla CEO has a long history of making false statements about changes to the platform, all signs are pointing to this one being legitimate.

He even went to far as to say “We’re cutting the Twitter logo from the building with blowtorches… it’s got to come off somehow.”

Not sure what subtle clues gave it way, but I like the letter X pic.twitter.com/nwB2tEfLr8

As is his custom, Musk announced the change via a tweet earlier today. “And soon we shall bid adieu to the twitter brand and, gradually, all the birds,” he wrote. “If a good enough X logo is posted tonight, we’ll make [it] go live worldwide tomorrow.”

Later in a Twitter Spaces audio chat, he replied “Yes” when asked if the Twitter logo would change. “It should have been done a long time ago,” Musk said. He is also claiming the interim logo will go live later today. So that was either the fastest logo contest ever or he already had a design in mind.

On the back end, Musk has already changed the name of the business to X Corp. Website X.com redirects to Twitter. This is fueling reports that Musk wants to build a “super app” called, you guessed it, X.

It seems the concept is based on platforms like China’s WeChat. Super apps like India’s PayTM and Indonesia’s GoJek let users pay for services via a finance system. Whereas WeChat is more of a massaging and social media platform. Last year, it was estimated to have 1.29 billion users in China alone.

While the bird logo has become synonymous with Twitter, if he is looking to overhaul the entire platform, breaking with the old makes sense. It’s not like Musk has been super precious about the logo in the past. He changed it to Dogecoin’s Shiba Inu dog in April which caused a spike in the meme coin’s market value. Which also had some accusing him of insider trading.

It seems for right now all we can really do is see if this shift from Twitter to X is a rousing success or a massive dumpster fire.
